Budget version of MZ-R900. Differences include, non-lcd remote, AA battery instead of gumstick, lack of jog lever, lack of cd-text transfer support, lack of date-time stamp recordings, lack of personal disc memory, lack of microphone sensitivity switch.
Some EEPROM values can be changed to unlock missing MZ-R900 features. Tutorial at this link. A remote with a screen is required for some of these features.
Variations: The MZ-R700DPC was announced Februrary 28, 2001. This bundle included the Digital PCLink (a Xitel MD-PORT DG2), a USB sound card with TOSLINK digital audio output, for dubbing audio from computer software onto minidiscs.
An MZ-R700PC is reported in Asian markets with the analog audio adapter, the Xitel MD-PORT AN1.
